New Year’s Resolutions 2009

by Michael Camilleri

So the other Mike at work1 has been talking to me about trying to be more productive in his life. He’s been reading a few books, trying out a couple of the strategies and generally attempting to get more stuff done. This must be contagious because I’ve been feeling it, too. I’m not sure if New Year’s Resolutions count as getting things done or are merely procrastination but I felt writing some down might at least be helpful in motivating other people (to write theirs down, too).

Now I realise we’re already halfway into January so you’ll have to forgive these resolutions for being a little late (one of the resolutions isn’t to be more punctual). Some of the resolutions are very specific and will be able to be done (resolved?) by the end of this month. Others are more general and will continue throughout the year. I don’t want this to be a post and forget type of thing so I’ve set a reminder to check back how I’m doing on these in three months. Hopefully potential public humilitation will be something that motivates me to actually get some of these things done.

Without further ado, the resolutions (in no particular order):

  • Complete 100 push-up course.
  • Go to bed by 10:00 pm almost every night.
  • Wake up at 6:00 am almost every day.
  • Write more.
  • Brush my teeth two times a day.
  • Spend at least half an hour each weekday studying Japanese.
  • Write letters to law firms asking for work experience.
  • Don’t eat chips alone.
  • Don’t eat McDonald’s, KFC, Lotteria, etc alone.
  • Write thank you card for Jacqui.
  • Go and play basketball every second Sunday.

There you have it. All in all a pretty mundane list. Some of the items on that list don’t make me especially proud (I have to make a resolution to brush my teeth?), others make me feel especially old (I’m going to bed at 10 pm?) and others are almost so familiar I worry putting them on the list is a guarantee they won’t get done (write more). We’ll see what happens in three months.

I haven’t read a lot of resolutions from any of my friends. Time to ‘fess up. What do you resolve to get done in 2009?

  1. I currently work for the Board of Education in Sakai while another Mike works for the International Department. We must be the only two foreigners working in the entirety of the building and we’re both called Mike.
