Glen: Feel free to disagree, but I'm confident that the phone Businessweek meant was the Nokia phone. While the Samsung phone referred to earlier was certainly used in The Matrix Reloaded I don't believe it ever attained the iconic status of the Nokia 8110 (nor was it featured as prominently in the film itself). After all, if Businessweek meant The Matrix Reloaded why not just say blockbusters like that film?

The exact quote from the article was "in blockbusters like The Matrix". Are you claiming Matrix Reloaded wasn't "a blockbuster like The Matrix"? :-)

Alex: Sorry, that was unclear. I was trying to make the point that Apple was a company where the fact that engineers worked together with others wasn't a problem.

cak: I'm a lawyer, not a programmer, but that seems a rather narrow way to define engineers. Not sure that's exactly what Businessweek had in mind.

I did have a MiniDisc player. Two, actually. One played MDs that used no compression and the other played MDs that used Sony's proprietary ATRAC3 compression. I loved both of them (despite their flaws) and wish Sony would have been the company that Apple became.

Ben: The Wikipedia article quite prominently states that the Samsung phone which you're referring to was used in The Matrix Reloaded, not The Matrix.

I had the exact same upbringing as you did. Except, we were poor. I was always well fed, there was always an apple or orange available to snack on. But we never went out to eat.

I also have arrived at the same life as you. We go out to eat every night. Cooking is to much of a mess to bother with. To exacerbate the problem, my wife hates cooking too. It took over a decade to figure out that it depresses my wife to watch the food that she just prepared simply vanish in the matter of minutes. So between the two of us dinner is not something we look forward to unless we are going out.

I have blamed my poor upbringing on my desire to go out to eat. Now that I have the means to go out, why bother with the mundane exercise of fixing dinner.

I have been considering the possibility that mundane chores may have other side benefits. Enforcing discipline on yourself can't be a bad thing for your life. What other areas of your life will improve simply because you have a little extra discipline?

I added a small amount of discipline to my life in High School for religious reasons. I decided to start tithing and stop cussing. During that period my grades sky rocketed and friendships flourished. All hell broke loose shortly after and both disciplines went out the door.

I share your questions about why I am this way but I don't have any answers.

Feel free to email me privately.

By Samsung, they likely meant Samsung:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Samsung_SPH-N270

Additionally, Sony does write their own software, for their own hardware. Even though the OS is Windows, the drivers are most certainly Sony. It is also easy to find out that people almost always complain about the crapware on a Sony computer.

Software engineers are not engineers, no matter how much you or any programmer wants it to be true. There is no professional industry body for software engineers. And I say this as a developer. Maybe your article could do with some extra research.

Sony used to be such a great company, then they got into content production, and they sold out and became crap. And they have always produced bad software, I guess you have never had a MiniDisc MP3.

Part of the problem is that I live in the suburbs (or what passes for the suburbs in Osaka/Kyoto) and were I still to be in Sydney I would probably have more choice and thus be eating 'better'. But I don't think that's really an excuse. What does it say about me if the only way I can eat well is if I'm surrounded by cheap, (relatively) healthy restaurants? It's not as if there's a dearth of good food at supermarkets. I'm just not able to make myself want to prepare it.
